Artists Statement
My practice is based around the transient memory of others, I photograph and draw people of whom I know nothing. These images then become inspiration for large oil paintings that are in them-selves works of memory. The initial image is transformed through several stages where each stage informs the next but of stays visible on the surface as a memory of what constitutes the final image.
I rely entirely upon the viewer to provide the context of my work. This acknowledgement of the role of the viewer means that when painting I am aware of the need to asses the marks I make and consider how they may be interpreted especially as my work features the human body and people. I prefer to work with abstracted literal images rather than pure abstraction as pure abstraction would completely remove any interaction between me and the viewer. An attempt at literal representation would not provide me with the necessary uncertainty and freedom that I seek in my relationship with the viewer, both would be diminished by any identifiable context or narrative.
By working with the traditional medium of oil paint I avoid questions about context suggested by using unique or unusual mediums or mediums that carry an associated significance. I do acknowledge that working with oils gives reference to a great tradition of painting. However I feel that an understanding of historical and contemporary painting is essential in developing my practice

Biography
I was born in the northeast and have lived most of my life in Newcastle. I went to school in the west end of Newcastle where I first realised I had a talent for drawing. However after leaving school I did not follow an artistic path. Redundancy in my early thirties caused me to re-evaluate my life and realise that I had ignored a potentially very productive and satisfying aspect of my life. I returned to work after a year off travelling. At the same time I started a BA in Fine Art (part time) at the University of Sunderland. After graduating in July 2006 I gave up my job in Information Technology to become a full time artist.

Artistic Practice
Since graduating I have been trying to establish a career as a self employed full time artist. Freed from the constraints of a degree course (not a negative thing, but limiting) and a full time job I now have more time to concentrate on my art. In order to do this I have a studio within the Waygood studios. I took my current studio at the Waygood in 2004. I see having a studio, a work place away from the home environment as an essential part of the practice which I developed as part of my degree.

2007: The Harker Herald. Work selected as part of a year long exhibition of art work by Waygood Studio artists. My work will displayed for the entire month of August.
